It is important to understand which salt products to use in different situations so that you do not do damage to walkways and plants.
Sodium chloride is what is usually thought of as standard rock salt and can be used on asphalt driveways. It should not be used on concrete, flagstone or brick surfaces as it will these materials to break up. Excessive Sodium chloride will also damage lawns and plants.
Materials such as calcium chloride, magnesium chloride and potassium chloride are all less likely to damage concrete, flagstone or brick surfaces.
All salts can damage lawns and plants if over applied.
