Why Core Aeration Is So Good For Your Lawn

Aerator being pushed through a yard

Core Aeration Is A Key To A Beautiful Lawn

core aerationLet’s face it. The soil in our area is thick, compacted clay. Not exactly optimal for growing a nice lust lawn. The problem with clay is that it makes it difficult for air, water and nutrients to get to the root system where it is needed. It also holds on tightly to what nutrients are available, and does not release them easily to the plants that need them.

So, what can be done?

Core aeration is the answer.

Core aeration is the process of literally punching holes in the ground below a lawn and lift a soil core out of it. It is done with a machine called a lawn aerator.

Core aeration actually solves two problems that afflict lawns in our area; compact soil and thatch.  Our soils are clay based and are naturally compacted. Try pushing your finger through a concrete block. That is what it feels like for a tender root trying to grow through our soils. Aeration breaks up the soil structure and creates spaces for the roots to grow faster, deeper and stronger. Aeration also creates a conduit for air, water and nutrients to reach the plant roots. Additionally, the cores that break up on the lawn surface help create a seed bed to help germinated grass seed take root.

Thatch is a build-up of dead grass materials that lies below the living lawn. If left unchecked, thatch becomes a breeding ground for harmful diseases and insects. Aerating punches holes through the thatch and allows air to circulate. The more air that circulates, the faster the dead grass build-up breaks down.

Partnered with pH adjustment and over seeding, core aeration is one of the best things you can do for your lawn year in and year out.
