Celebrate Earth Day And Make A Difference

Earth Day is this Sunday April 22, 2018. This observance arose from an interest in gathering national support for environmental issues. This is more important than ever as the environment and natural resources are more challenged than ever. Common Earth Day activities include planting trees, cleaning up litter, or simply enjoying nature through hiking, gardening, or taking a stroll in a local park.

We present a few ideas on how to take further steps to celebrate Earth Day with your family and friends.

Earth DayRide A Bike

This activity has double the benefits. Not only are you helping to reduce carbon emissions from a vehicle, you are getting a great work out for yourself! Pick atrial or park to ride in and enjoy a beautiful day. Don’t own a bike? There are plenty of bike share opportunities in most areas.

Recycle E-Waste

By now, most of us realize that recycling makes sense and we should do it. One challenge with recycling is what to do with old electronic equipment. Electronic waste (aka e-waste) is the fastest growing waste stream in the world. Chances are, you’ve got an outdated electronic appliance gathering dust somewhere in your house right now, and your neighbors probably do too. This Earth Day, why not help make sure those gadget end up properly recycled instead of taking up space or leaching toxins in a landfill? Use this EPA tool to locate a responsible e-waste recycler in your area, and let your neighbors know that you’ll be happy to take their stuff in with yours.

Plant Food

Growing your own food can be rewarding, healthy and fun. By growing even the smallest amount of your own food you are reducing the carbon footprint it takes to grow, ship and purchase it. And, you can control what, if any, chemicals are involved. This Earth Day, plant one thing that can be consumed by your family. Maybe it’s just a few basil plants, or maybe it’s an entire garden. But no matter what, get something growing.

Earth DayPlant Food For Nature

There are so many plants you can use in your garden that will help feed nature. Whether it is flowers for pollinators or seed producing plants for birds, these plants are both attractive and beneficial. Extra bonus, you get the opportunity to bring nature into your garden!

Collect Water

Why not benefit from the rain? Installing a water harvesting system, or rain barrel, is easy and relatively inexpensive. Instead of letting rain run off your roof and out of your property, why not collect it and use it to water your garden. Rain is free, by the way.

Get Outside

Earth Day is about enjoying and taking care of the planet, so why not spend it outside. Despite our best efforts to pollute and destroy it, the Earth is still an amazing, beautiful place to explore. Visit a park, have a picnic, go for a hike. Reconnecting with nature is the best way to remind yourself why we’re fighting so hard to protect it.
