How We Improved This Home’s Rockville, MD Front Yard

This Rockville, MD Front Yard Needed A Facelift

Dated. Overgrown. Boring. Those were the words that best described this Rockville, MD Front Yard. Allentuck Landscaping Co. was tasked with coming up with a plan to vastly improve its curb appeal and make it a more welcoming landscape. But where to start?

Tim Carbis headed up this renovation. His first step was to evaluate what in the existing landscape was worth keeping and what would need to be changed.

On the “keep” side was a mature Bloodgood Japanese Maple. This tree would become the foundation for us to build the new landscape around.

Everything else, including the narrow, falling apart walkway, would need to go.

A new walkway was designed to be 5’ wide, flaring wider at the driveway. Constructed of Pennsylvania flagstone set on concrete, its serpentine curves would welcome our customer home each night.

At the far end of the front foundation, the slope drops off enough to warrant the use of a stone border to retain it and provide definition. A Tuscarora Crape Myrtle elegantly helps anchor this corner as well. Underplanted with Salvia ‘Purple Rain’ and Endless Summer Hydrangea, this corner of the house was sure to explode with color come summer time.

Other plant selections included Viburnum ‘Cardinal Candy’, Pieris ‘Mountain Fire’ and Cold Mop Cypress, each chosen for attributes that would provide year-round interest. Of special note, because this customer like annual flowers so much, a large area was left open in order to rotate flowers as the seasons changed.

At the end of the day, our customer has a landscape the truly “pops” with color and interest. It will mature into a spectacular garden to be enjoyed for years to come.
