How Does Our Vegetable Garden Grow?
One of our long-standing traditions at Allentuck Landscaping Co. is to grow a company vegetable garden. Our garden is designed to provide good, healthy food to our staff and their families. This year, due to our move to Rockville, we had to start our garden from scratch again. This allowed us a fresh start, which all gardens sometimes need.
The garden is organic so no pesticides are ever used on it. In most years we grow around 35 different kinds of vegetables. When people visit us and see the garden, they are surprised that we go to the trouble and of the vast quantity and variations of food that we grow. Most people ask why we do it. The reasons are many.
We Are Gardeners
First and perhaps foremost, we are gardeners and love what we do. Everyday we go out to our customers homes to create and care for their gardens. We actually get a little jealous of how nice they look. This garden is ours and along with it, we get the pride of having something beautiful of our own.
Healthy Eating
Healthy food is expensive. Healthy food is good, junk food is bad. Our garden provides healthy food for our staff and their families. Each week, team members are given food to take home to their families. Some of the vegetables (tomatoes, squash, peppers) are welcomed with excitement, some not so much (kale, brussels sprouts, beets). All we ask is that they try new things and eat what they take home.
Stress Relief
Yes, we occasionally do get stressed out just like everyone. It is extremely relaxing to walk through our garden and pull the occasional weed or pick ripening produce. Once de-stressed, it is a lot easier to be production back in the office.
Education
As an organization, we are constantly learning. The garden provides us a real-life outdoor classroom from which to learn about the plants our customers may have in their gardens and the pests that may affect them. This knowledge helps us advise our customers better.
